EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image, taken on October 23rd, 1915, captures the aftermath of the first recorded use of gas by British forces during World War I. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News on December 07, 1915, shows soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) dealing with the aftermath of a gas attack near the town of Wulverghem, in Flanders, Belgium. The use of poison gas in warfare was a devastating new development in the conflict, with the Germans having first employed it at Ypres in April 1915. The image shows British soldiers wearing gas masks, as they approach a crater filled with toxic gas. The scene is chaotic, with soldiers in various stages of distress, some collapsing, while others appear to be helping their comrades. The use of gas in battle became a common feature of the war, with both sides employing it to gain an advantage on the battlefield. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the horrors of war and the human cost of military innovation. It is a significant historical image, documenting a turning point in the conflict and a grim chapter in the history of warfare.
