EDITORS COMMENTS
In August 1914, as the First World War broke out, the 1st Battalion of the Nigeria Regiment, a British colonial army unit, embarked on a journey from Kaduna, Nigeria, to Cameroon, West Central Africa. The soldiers, a diverse group of native and non-commissioned officers, are seen here aboard a train bound for Lagos, Nigeria, the departure point for their onward journey to Douala, the capital of Cameroon. The Nigeria Regiment, raised in 1854, was an integral part of the British colonial military establishment in West Africa. During the First World War, the regiment was called upon to serve in the Cameroons, a German colony that had been declared a British protectorate following the outbreak of war. The regiment's mission was to secure the region and prevent German forces from advancing southwards. The soldiers in this photograph, dressed in their khaki uniforms and armed with rifles, are seen here in a moment of respite during their long and arduous journey. The train, with its steam-powered engines and tracks stretching into the distance, symbolizes the modern technology that enabled the British military to quickly mobilize and transport troops across vast distances. This photograph offers a glimpse into the experiences of the soldiers of the Nigeria Regiment during the First World War, as they travelled from their base in Kaduna to the front lines in Cameroon. The image also underscores the global reach of the conflict, which saw British troops deployed to far-flung corners of the empire to defend British interests and secure strategic resources.
