Step back in time and explore the historic Brighton County Borough Asylum at Haywards Heath, Sussex. Originally established in 1857 as the Sussex County Lunatic Asylum, this imposing Victorian and Edwardian institution underwent several name changes throughout the years. Between 1894 and 1903, it was known as the East Sussex Asylum, then from 1903 to 1914 as the Brighton County Borough Asylum. From 1919 to 1948, it was named the Brighton County Borough Mental Hospital, and later the St. Francis Hospital. The grand entrance gateway, with its ornate ironwork and tall stone tower, stands proudly at the end of the long driveway. This impressive structure once marked the entrance to the hospital, which provided care for those in need of mental health support during the late 19th, early 20th, and mid-20th centuries. During the 1850s and 1890s, workhouses and asylums like this one were common in England, serving as the primary institutions for housing and caring for the poor, the elderly, the infirm, and those with mental health issues. The Brighton County Borough Asylum, with its beautiful architecture and dedication to medical care, represents an important piece of Sussex and British history. This photograph, taken in the early 1900s, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the grandeur and intricacy of the hospital's entrance. The image transports us back to a time when the primary focus was on providing care and support for those in need, regardless of their socio-economic background. As we admire the historic beauty of the gateway, we are reminded of the importance of mental health care and the progress that has been made in the field over the past century. The Brighton County Borough Asylum at Haywards Heath stands as a testament to the resilience and strength of those who have sought refuge within its walls and to the dedication of the medical professionals who have provided care and support throughout the institution's rich history.
