The brave old Hendrick the great sachem or chief of the Moha

The brave old Hendrick the great sachem or chief of the Mohawk Indians, ... Print shows Hendrick, Tiyanoka, also spelled Theyanoguin or Tee Yee Neen Ho Ga Row, the great Mohawk sachem, half-length portrait, facing left, wearing European style military uniform and holding hatchet in his right hand and a wampum belt in his left. Hendrick was one of four Mohawk Indians who visited England in 1710 and again in 1740. On his second visit he received elaborate court clothing trimmed with gold lace. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Hendrick, also known as Tiyanoka, Tee Yee Neen Ho Ga Row, or the Brave Old Hendrick, the great Mohawk sachem or chief. The portrait, created in 1755, shows Hendrick in a half-length pose, facing left, dressed in a European-style military uniform and holding both a hatchet in his right hand and a wampum belt in his left. Hendrick was an influential leader among the Mohawk Indians, making two notable visits to England in 1710 and 1740. During his second visit, he was bestowed with elaborate court clothing adorned with gold lace. This engraving may have been based on a painting created during that visit. Hendrick's image was available for purchase in the November 1755 issue of Gentlemen's Magazine, just months before his untimely death. A key figure in maintaining peace between the Six Nations and Great Britain, Hendrick played a pivotal role in the Albany Conference of 1754. Tragically, he was killed during the Battle of Lake George on September 8, 1755. This poignant print serves as a testament to Hendrick's significant impact on the historical relationship between the Mohawk Indians and the British.
