EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts three distinct species of fish: the Bluespotted Cornetfish (Fistularia tabacaria), the Chinese Trumpetfish (Aulostomus chinensis), and the Hippolyte Cloquet's Trumpetfish (Fistularia hippocampus). The illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles" published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The artwork was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Bluespotted Cornetfish, also known as the Bluespotted Cornet, is a marine fish characterized by its elongated snout, which resembles a horn, and its distinctive blue spots. The Chinese Trumpetfish, or Chinese Trumpet, is another elongated fish with a distinctive trumpet-shaped mouth and a series of dark vertical bars. The Hippolyte Cloquet's Trumpetfish, named after the French naturalist Hippolyte Cloquet, is a similar species with a more slender body and fewer spots. The intricate details of these fish are beautifully captured in this engraving, which was executed by Massard under the direction of Turpin. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy to the illustration, making it a stunning representation of these fascinating marine creatures. The Bluespotted Cornetfish, Chinese Trumpetfish, and Hippolyte Cloquet's Trumpetfish continue to be of interest to scientists and aquarists alike, and this historic engraving remains an important record of their appearance and natural history.
