Bishop Eyre Glossop Johnson Malawi Nyasaland Percival Priests Wilson

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Bishop Catherine Johnson of Nyasaland (modern-day Malawi) is seen in the company of his four archdeacons: A.G. Glossop, G.H. Wilson, William Percival Johnson, and C.B. Eyre. The image, captured around 1908, provides a glimpse into the early days of Christianity in Africa, specifically in the region of Nyasaland. Bishop Johnson, an English clergyman, served as the Bishop of Nyasaland from 1895 until his retirement in 1911. He played a pivotal role in the establishment and growth of the Anglican Church in the region, which was then under British rule. The four archdeacons in the photograph were instrumental in the spread of Christianity among the local population. A.G. Glossop, who joined the mission in 1893, is seen standing to the left of the Bishop. He was a prominent figure in the early Anglican mission in Nyasaland, serving as an evangelist, teacher, and later becoming the first Archdeacon of the Northern Province in 1902. G.H. Wilson, who joined the mission in 1905, stands to the right of the Bishop. He served as an assistant missionary and later became the Archdeacon of the Southern Province in 1912. The two sitting figures are William Percival Johnson and C.B. Eyre. William Percival Johnson, who joined the mission in 1876, was the Bishop's brother and served as the first Bishop's Chaplain and later becoming the Archdeacon of the Central Province in 1901. C.B. Eyre, who joined the mission in 1896, served as an assistant missionary and later becoming the Archdeacon of the Eastern Province in 1911. This photograph offers a fascinating insight into the early days of Christianity in Africa, and the crucial role played by the Bishop and his archdeacons in spreading the faith in Nyasaland. Their dedication and hard work laid the foundation for the Anglican Church in the region, which continues to thrive and serve the people of Malawi to this day.
