Birstall, W Yorkshire - Unveiling statue of Joseph Priestly

Birstall, W Yorkshire - Unveiling the statue of Joseph Priestly on 12th October 1912 - at this point the unveiling party had adjourned to the Temperance Hall. Following the tragic assassination of the MP Jo Cox on 16th June 2016 (almost within sight of this statue), thousands of flowers were placed around it in remembrance. Priestly (1733-1804) was a 18th-century English theologian, dissenting clergyman, natural philosopher, chemist, educator, and Liberal political theorist who supported the French Revolution and campaigned for the legal and civic rights of Dissenters. In Jo Coxs humanitarian campaigning can almost been seen a distant echo of Priestly, making the recent spontaneous memorial very apt indeed. Date: 1912

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken on 12th October 1912, a crowd of onlookers gathers at the Temperance Hall in Birstall, West Yorkshire, following the unveiling of a statue dedicated to the revered 18th-century English figure, Joseph Priestley. The distinguished doctor, theologian, dissenting clergyman, natural philosopher, chemist, educator, and liberal political theorist is seen standing amongst the throng, his stern yet thoughtful expression reflecting the profound impact he had on the intellectual and political landscape of his time. Born in 1733, Priestley was a pioneering linguist, scholar, and grammarian, whose groundbreaking work in the fields of science and education laid the foundations for future generations. A fervent supporter of the French Revolution and an ardent campaigner for the legal and civic rights of Dissenters, Priestley's influence extended far beyond the realm of academia. The unveiling ceremony, which took place in front of the statue, was a momentous occasion for the people of Birstall, who came out in their thousands to pay tribute to their esteemed local hero. The image captures the excitement and anticipation of the crowd, their eyes fixed on the figure of Priestley as he stands proudly before them. Sadly, the tranquility of this scene was shattered on 16th June 2016, when the tragic assassination of the local MP, Jo Cox, occurred just within sight of the statue. In the wake of this senseless act of violence, thousands of flowers were placed around the statue in remembrance, creating a poignant and powerful tribute to both Priestley and Cox, two remarkable individuals whose humanitarian campaigning continues to resonate with the people of Birstall and beyond.
