1888 Benz Carl Patent Spoked Wheeled Wheels
EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Benz Patent-Motorwagen Number 3 of 1888, a historical three-wheeled vehicle that marked a pivotal moment in the annals of automotive history. Considered to be the first petrol car to be brought into England, this groundbreaking invention was designed by Karl Benz, featuring a horizontal single cylinder motor. But it was Bertha Benz, the courageous wife of its creator, who wrote the first chapter of automotive adventure with this vehicle. In 1888, she embarked on an unprecedented journey, driving an astonishing distance of over 106 kilometers (sixty miles) to visit her mother. This daring excursion is believed to be the first long-distance journey by automobile, a testament to the reliability and capability of this early motorcar. During her journey, Bertha encountered various challenges, including the need to find fuel. She stopped at pharmacies to purchase light petroleum, which she used to keep the engine running. In the process, she inadvertently invented brake pad lining. As she descended steep hills, the lack of effective braking proved to be a challenge. Ingeniously, she used wood shavings to line the brake pads, providing a much-needed solution to the problem. This photograph encapsulates the spirit of innovation and determination that characterized the early days of motoring. The Benz Patent-Motorwagen Number 3 of 1888, with its spoked wheels and three wheels, stands as a testament to the pioneering achievements of Karl and Bertha Benz, paving the way for the automotive revolution that was to follow.
