EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Benjamin Franklin Wade: The Radical Republican Champion" This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the stern yet determined visage of Benjamin Franklin Wade (1800-1878), an influential American statesman and senator from Ohio. Wade's political career spanned over four decades, during which he championed the cause of the Republican Party and advocated for the abolition of slavery. Born on October 23, 1800, in Ripon, New Hampshire, Wade moved to Ohio in 1823 and settled in Chillicothe. He served as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1834 to 1836, and later represented Ohio in the United States Senate from 1857 to 1861 and again from 1867 to 1878. Wade's most notable period in politics began during the Civil War, when he became a leading voice in the Radical Republican faction. He was a staunch opponent of President Abraham Lincoln's more moderate policies towards the Confederacy and advocated for harsher measures against the rebellion. Wade's most significant legislative achievement came in 1864, when he sponsored the Wade-Davis Bill, which sought to exclude Confederate states from the United States and provide for the reconstruction of the Southern states. Despite his radical views, Wade was a respected and influential figure in his party. He was a strong advocate for civil rights and the abolition of slavery, and his leadership helped shape the Republican Party's stance on these issues. Tragically, Wade was assassinated on February 17, 1878, by a disgruntled office seeker, just months before the end of his Senate term. This photograph, taken during Wade's later years, captures the intensity and conviction that defined his political career. It serves as a powerful reminder of the complex and often contentious history of American politics and the enduring legacy of those who fought for justice and equality.
