EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the thrilling moment from the play "Ben Hur," written by Lew Wallace and adapted for the stage by William Young in 1880. The scene showcases the iconic chariot race, a spectacular and dramatic sequence that has enthralled audiences for generations. The image is based on Alexander von Wagner's famous painting, "The Chariot Race," but with a notable difference: the billing for Klaw & Erlangers Stupendous Production has been replaced by that of Mr. George Dances Co. This suggests that the production being represented in the photo is the one touring to the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth in circa 1913. The play "Ben Hur" is a timeless tale of revenge, redemption, and friendship set in ancient Rome. The chariot race is a pivotal moment in the story, as the titular character, Ben-Hur, seeks to exact vengeance on his childhood friend, Messala, who had betrayed him. The race is not only a thrilling spectacle but also a turning point in the narrative, leading Ben-Hur to a profound realization of the true meaning of mercy and forgiveness. The 1910s were a golden age for live entertainment, and productions like "Ben Hur" were some of the most popular and elaborate shows of the time. The combination of drama, excitement, and grandeur made these productions a must-see for audiences, and the chariot race in "Ben Hur" was undoubtedly one of the most memorable and awe-inspiring sequences. This print is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the world of live theatre during the early 20th century and the enduring appeal of "Ben Hur.
