EDITORS COMMENTS
Impressions of Rheims: A Woman's Perspective by Helen McKie - 1919 Amidst the desolation and destruction wrought by the First World War, the once vibrant streets of Rheims, France, now lay in ruins. As the dust began to settle and the long process of reconstruction began, Helen McKie, a bystander artist, captured the poignant and transformative scenes of the war-torn town. In this series of sketches, McKie depicts the aftermath of the devastation. In the first image, a vast open space has been created in one part of the town, where huge quantities of iron goods are now stored. The emptiness of the area serves as a stark reminder of the destruction that once occupied the land. Moving through the deserted streets, McKie captures the sight of a newsagent blowing his horn to alert the houses of the arrival of the papers. The once bustling town, now silent and still, is brought back to life, however briefly, by the sound of the horn. Another familiar sight in Rheims at this time is the employment of huge numbers of German prisoners in clearing up the debris. The prisoners, a reminder of the enemy that had once occupied the land, work tirelessly to help rebuild their former enemy's homes. Among the destruction, there are glimmers of hope. On the doors of those houses that could be restored, instructions are chalked up, indicating that the owner has returned or is coming back. The resilience of the people of Rheims shines through, as they begin the long and arduous process of rebuilding their lives and their town.
