EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from the esteemed Jussieus Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles published between 1816 and 1830, showcases three distinct species of European freshwater fish: the Barbel (Barbus barbus), the Bleak (Alburnus alburnus), and the Reptile Fish or European Minnow, also known as the Barbelle or Hippolyte Cloquet (Barbus plebejus). The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), and meticulously engraved by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. Pretre was a renowned artist whose career began at Empress Josephine's zoo and later progressed to the Museum of Natural History. The Barbel, depicted on the left, is a large, cylindrical fish with a distinctive long, barbelled mouth. The Bleak, illustrated in the center, is a small, slender fish with a silver-gray body and dark spots. The Reptile Fish, or Barbelle, is shown on the right, with a long, eel-like body and a series of small, rounded pectoral and pelvic fins. This intricately detailed engraving not only showcases the beauty and diversity of these fish species but also highlights the exceptional artistry and scientific accuracy of the time. The Jussieus Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles remains an invaluable resource for those studying the natural world and the history of natural history illustration.
