Babys cot by the side of its mothers bed
Prison babies at play in the day nursery in Holloway, a women only prison where babies who were either born there or were under three months old when their mothers were jailed were cared for in the prison. The babies slept in cots within their mothers cell, with nurses overseeing the babies welfare. At nine months of age the baby had to leave the prison

EDITORS COMMENTS
A Moment of Temporary Respite: Prison Babies at Play in Holloway, 1909 This poignant photograph captures a moment of reprieve for both mother and baby within the confines of Holloway Prison in London, England. Established in 1852, Holloway Prison was the largest women's prison in Europe at the time, housing over 1,000 inmates. In this historical image, we see a baby's cot placed beside its mother's bed, with the mother watching over her child as they play together. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was not uncommon for women to give birth in prison. In such cases, babies were cared for in the prison's day nursery until they reached the age of nine months. The nursery, which was staffed by nurses, provided a space for the babies to sleep, play, and be cared for while their mothers served their sentences. The image of the mother and baby sleeping side by side in the prison cell is a poignant reminder of the unique challenges faced by incarcerated mothers and their young children during this time. While the mother was unable to provide her child with the ideal living conditions outside of prison, the presence of the cot by her bed allowed her to maintain a connection with her baby, even in the most unexpected of places. As the baby grows and approaches the age of nine months, it must leave the prison and be placed in external care, marking the end of this temporary arrangement. This photograph offers a glimpse into the complex realities of motherhood and imprisonment during a time when the needs of both mother and child were not always prioritized within the criminal justice system.
