1. Title: Avro 679 Manchester: The First Prototype with Twin Tail-Fins (1939). This evocative photograph captures the Avro 679 Manchester, the first prototype of this British four-engine heavy bomber, as it undergoes testing at Woodford Aerodrome in Egdeworth, England, in 1939. The Avro Manchester was a development of the successful Avro Anson, and was designed primarily as a replacement for the aging Handley Page Hampden and Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bombers in the Royal Air Force (RAF). The Manchester was a significant departure from its predecessors, featuring a number of innovative design features. One of the most notable of these was the adoption of twin tail-fins, which were intended to improve stability and reduce drag. The Manchester was also the first RAF bomber to be fitted with retractable landing gear, and it boasted a top speed of over 200 miles per hour. Despite these advances, the Manchester's development was marred by a number of setbacks. Initial testing revealed a number of issues with the aircraft's engines, and it was not until 1942 that the Manchester entered operational service with the RAF. By this time, however, it was overshadowed by more advanced bombers such as the Halifax and Lancaster. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the early days of the Manchester's development, as it sits proudly on the tarmac at Woodford Aerodrome, its twin tail-fins and sleek lines a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the Avro team. With the backdrop of wartime England, this image serves as a poignant reminder of the pivotal role that the Manchester played in the RAF's efforts to defend the United Kingdom during World War II.
