Austrian Musical Trio - Original Wiener Schrammeln

Austrian Musical Trio - Original Wiener Schrammeln. Schrammelmusik is a style of Viennese folk music originating in the late nineteenth century and still performed in present-day Austria. The style is named for the prolific folk composers Johann and Josef Schrammel. A typical Schrammelmusik ensemble consists of two violins (only one seen here) or fiddles, a double-necked contraguitar (pictured here), and a G clarinet. Often a button accordion, called a Schrammelharmonika, is included (as pictured on this card). Date: circa 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Original Wiener Schrammeln, an Austrian musical trio performing in the traditional Schrammelmusik style. Schrammelmusik is a cherished Viennese folk music genre that emerged in the late 19th century and continues to enchant audiences in present-day Austria. Named after the prolific folk composers Johann and Josef Schrammel, this unique musical style is characterized by the use of two violins or fiddles, a double-necked contraguitar, and occasionally, a button accordion called a Schrammelharmonika. In this image, only one violin is visible, while the double-necked contraguitar takes center stage. The contraguitar, a distinctive instrument in Schrammelmusik ensembles, features a guitar neck on one side and a violin neck on the other. The musician on the left holds a G clarinet, adding depth and richness to the ensemble's sound. The date of this photograph is estimated to be around 1905, capturing the essence of a bygone era in Austrian musical history. Schrammelmusik remains an essential part of Austria's cultural heritage, providing a glimpse into the country's vibrant and diverse musical traditions.
