EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, showcases two intriguing species: the Atlantic saury, Scomberesox saurus, and the Nile bichir, Polypterus bichir. The Atlantic saury, also known as the Atlantic herring or mackerel-pout, is a small, silvery fish native to the North Atlantic Ocean. It is an important food source for both humans and various marine predators. The engraving accurately depicts its elongated body, dorsal and anal fins, and distinctive dark lateral stripe. The Nile bichir, on the other hand, is a unique, prehistoric-looking fish-reptile from the Nile River basin in Africa. This amphibious species is characterized by its long, eel-like body, four pairs of fins, and bony, lobe-finned limbs. The bichir's ability to breathe air and live in both water and land environments made it an intriguing subject for naturalists during this period. The illustration was created by the talented Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was expertly executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. This beautiful piece is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized natural history illustrations during the early 19th century.
