Atlanta, Ga. Federal soldiers relaxing by guns of captured f

Atlanta, Ga. Federal soldiers relaxing by guns of captured fort. Photograph of the War in the West. These photographs are of Sherman in Atlanta, September-November, 1864. After three and a half months of incessant maneuvering and much hard fighting, Sherman forced Hood to abandon the munitions center of the Confederacy. Sherman remained there, resting his war-worn men and accumulating supplies, for nearly two and a half months. During the occupation, George N. Barnard, official photographer of the Chief Engineers Office, made the best documentary record of the war in the West; but much of what he photographed was destroyed in the fire that spread from the military facilities blown up at Shermans departure on November 15. Date 1864

Atlanta Captured Federal Fort Guns Relaxing

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite for Federal soldiers in Atlanta, Georgia during the final stages of the American Civil War. Taken in September-November of 1864, the image shows soldiers of the Union Army relaxing by the guns of a recently captured fort. After a grueling three and a half month campaign, General William T. Sherman had successfully forced Confederate General John Bell Hood to abandon the strategic city and vital munitions center of the Confederacy. Sherman and his men spent the following two and a half months in Atlanta, resting and accumulating supplies for the next phase of their march through the South. During this occupation, George N. Barnard, the official photographer of the Chief Engineers Office, made an invaluable documentary record of the war in the West. The images he captured, including this one, provide a unique and poignant glimpse into the realities of military life during this tumultuous period. The scene depicted in the photograph shows soldiers taking a break from their duties, leaning against the guns of the captured fort. Their relaxed posture and casual attire contrast sharply with the intense and often brutal fighting that had taken place in the days and weeks leading up to this moment. The soldiers appear weary but content, perhaps reflecting on the hard-won victory and looking forward to the next chapter in the war effort. Unfortunately, much of the documentation of Sherman's occupation of Atlanta was lost when military facilities were blown up at his departure on November 15, 1864. This photograph, however, stands as a testament to the historical significance of this pivotal moment in American history and the important role that photography played in recording the events of the Civil War.
