EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the entrance to the ASC Barracks on Marvels Lane in Grove Park, Lewisham, South East London, as it appeared in the early 1910s. Designed by T & J Norman Dinwiddy and erected between 1899 and 1902, the imposing buildings were originally used as a workhouse for the Greenwich Union, providing shelter for the poor and homeless. During the First World War, from 1914 to 1919, the site was repurposed for training Army Service Corps (ASC) recruits. The image shows two officers, smartly dressed in their military uniforms, standing at the entrance with a large dog. The officers' stern expressions and the dog's alert posture suggest a sense of duty and discipline. The buildings, with their Victorian and Edwardian architectural details, exude an air of authority and orderliness. Despite their imposing appearance, the buildings later served a very different purpose. From 1920 to 1993, they were transformed into Grove Park Hospital, providing medical treatment and care for those in need. The history of this site is a poignant reminder of the changing social and economic conditions in Lewisham during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The image also highlights the adaptability of architecture, as the same buildings that once served as a workhouse were later used to provide medical care and support to the community. This photograph is a valuable historical record of a significant moment in the history of this part of South East London.
