EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning illustration is taken from "Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium" (The Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname), a groundbreaking work by the renowned German naturalist and artist, Maria Sibylla Merian. Published in 1705, this seminal book was one of the first to document the metamorphosis of insects from egg to adult, based on direct observation. The illustration depicts Emperor moth caterpillars (Arsenura armida) feeding on the leaves of a Coral tree (Erythrina spp.), a flowering plant in the Fabaceae family. The Emperor moth is a large, beautiful moth with a wingspan of up to 25 cm, and is also known as the Giant Silk Moth. The caterpillars are characterized by their striking, colorful markings and long, spiny prolegs. The Coral tree, native to the tropics, is an angiosperm, or flowering plant, and is a member of the Eudicot clade. This illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricate relationship between these two organisms, with the caterpillars feeding on the leaves of the Coral tree, providing essential nutrients for their growth and development. Merian's meticulous attention to detail and her innovative approach to documenting the natural world continue to inspire and captivate audiences over three centuries after the publication of her seminal work.
