EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 86: Arboricola javanica, or the Javan Partridge, depicted in this exquisite 18th-century painting by Pieter Cornelius de Bevere, is a captivating example of the rich biodiversity of the avian world. This illustration is part of the Loten Collection of Coloured Drawings of Birds, Mammals, Insects & Plants, created between 1754 and 1757. The Javan Partridge, also known as the Chestnut-bellied Hill Partridge or the Arboricola Javanica, is a native of the Indonesian island of Java. This galliform bird is characterized by its mottled, cream and grey plumage, with a distinctive chestnut-colored belly. The Javan Partridge is an arboreal species, preferring to inhabit the forested hills and mountains of its native habitat. The painting, executed by the skilled hand of Pieter Cornelius de Bevere, captures the intricate details of the Javan Partridge's appearance, from its delicate feathers to its expressive eyes. The artist's attention to detail is further evident in the depiction of the bird's natural habitat, with lush foliage and vibrant flowers surrounding the partridge. This illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, as documented by the meticulous observations and artistic talents of the 18th-century naturalist community. The Loten Collection, and this painting in particular, provide valuable insights into the natural history of Java and the wider world during this period. The painting is attributed to Pieter Cornelius de Bevere, who was active between 1710 and 1789. The Loten Collection was compiled by Joan Gideon Loten, a Dutch naturalist who lived in Java from 1722 to 1781. The collection is now housed in the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands.
