EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the intensity and determination of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) members during the Votes for Women Rally held on 14th July 1912 in London. The photograph depicts Emmeline Pankhurst, the leading figure of the suffrage movement in the UK, riding a horse and attempting to "storm the Bastille," a symbolic representation of the fight for women's suffrage. The scarlet caps worn by the WSPU members, atop the flagpoles in the background, stand out strikingly against the grey sky, embodying the spirit of the gathering. Flora Drummond, a prominent suffragette and drummer for the WSPU, is shown in the foreground, drumming to rally the crowd. The drumbeat echoed through the streets of London, urging women to join the cause and make their voices heard. The suffragettes believed that disrupting public events and causing a commotion would draw attention to their cause and force the government to grant women the right to vote. The suffrage movement in the UK was a significant and often contentious period in British history. The WSPU, led by Emmeline Pankhurst, employed militant tactics to fight for women's suffrage, including protests, marches, and arson attacks on property. The movement eventually led to the Representation of the People Act 1918, which granted some women the right to vote for the first time. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the suffragettes and their unwavering commitment to securing women's suffrage in the UK.
