EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne Sophie Reventlow (1693-1743), depicted in this stunning portrait from around 1730, was a Danish-German noblewoman who became Queen Consort of King Frederick IV of Denmark and Norway as his second wife. Born into the powerful and influential Reventlow family, Anne Sophie was a highly educated and intelligent woman, known for her beauty, charm, and strong will. Frederick IV, who reigned from 1699 to 1730, was already married to Elisabeth Helene von Vieregg in a morganatic marriage, which was considered illegitimate by the Danish nobility. However, the king was deeply in love with Anne Sophie, and in 1721, they were secretly married in a ceremony at the Palace of Frederiksborg. The union was kept a closely guarded secret for several months, as the Danish nobility and the public were not informed of the marriage until the following year. Despite the initial opposition, Anne Sophie quickly won over the Danish and Norwegian people with her grace, charm, and intelligence. She became an influential figure at the Danish court, and her influence extended to foreign policy, particularly in relation to Sweden. Anne Sophie was also a patron of the arts and supported the Danish playwright Ludwig Holberg, among others. The couple had no children together, and Frederick IV died in 1730. Anne Sophie continued to serve as regent for their son, Christian VI, until he came of age in 1734. She remained a respected and beloved figure in Danish and Norwegian history, and her legacy continues to be celebrated to this day.
