Anna Maria Hall, née Fielding (1800-1881), was an Irish writer and the wife of Samuel Carter Hall. This portrait captures Anna Maria in her youth, with her long ringlets framing her smiling face and a distinct parting in her centre. Anna Maria was born into a prominent Irish family and was educated in Dublin before moving to London with her husband, where she became an active member of literary circles. Her writing career began in earnest in the 1830s, and she went on to publish numerous works of fiction and poetry, as well as biographies and translations. Her most famous work, "The Story of a Irish Cottage," was published in 1847 and was widely read and acclaimed for its vivid portrayal of Irish life. Despite her success, however, she faced numerous challenges in her personal life, including the death of several children and the financial struggles of her family.
