This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Andean condor, Vultur gryphus, a near-threatened species of New World vulture native to the Andes Mountains in South America. The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Sciences: Ornithology) published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Andean condor is the largest flying bird in the Americas, with a wingspan that can reach up to 10 feet (3 meters).
