EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite pencil sketch depicts Andamia amphibius, the suckerlip blenny, a fascinating bony fish discovered during Captain James Cook's second voyage of exploration to the southern continent from 1772 to 1775. The illustration was meticulously crafted by the renowned naturalist George Forster, who accompanied Cook on his journey as a scientist and artist. Forster's illustrations were instrumental in documenting the vast array of new species encountered during the expedition. The Andamia amphibius, a member of the Blenniidae family, is a small, colorful fish with a unique feature: a suction cup-like mouth. This adaptation allows the blenny to cling to rocks and other underwater surfaces with ease. The fish is also known as the combtooth blenny due to the small, comb-like structures on its gills. This illustration, titled "Ff. 183," is a testament to the spirit of adventure and discovery that characterized the 18th century. It is a reminder of the significant contributions made by Cook and Forster to the scientific community, expanding our understanding of the natural world and adding to the rich biodiversity records of the Actinopterygii, or ray-finned fish, and the Perciformes, or perch-like fish. The illustration was created by Johann Georg Adam Forster, who was born in 1754 and passed away in 1794. His work, along with that of his father Johann Christian Friedrich Höhne, was published in several volumes, including "Voyage Round the World by Way of the Great Southern Meridian," which documented the discoveries made during Cook's second voyage. This beautiful pencil sketch is a valuable historical artifact, offering a glimpse into the past and the remarkable achievements of those who dared to explore the unknown.
