1828 Alexander Anatomist Doctor Edinburgh Educator Monro Oval Physician Scientist Scot Scots Secundus Surgeon Underwood

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative oval portrait captures the distinguished visage of Alexander Monro (secundus) (1733-1817), a renowned Scottish anatomist, physician, and medical educator based in Edinburgh. Monro's significant contributions to the fields of anatomy and surgery during the late 18th and early 19th centuries left an indelible mark on medical science. Monro's dedication to anatomical research and teaching led to the establishment of the renowned Edinburgh School of Anatomy, which attracted students and scholars from around the world. His meticulous anatomical illustrations, produced in collaboration with the talented artist Henry Cousins, were considered the most accurate and detailed of their time. In the brown ink inscription below the portrait, Monro's son, also an accomplished anatomist at Edinburgh, presents the portrait to a Mr. Underwood. The date, 1828, suggests that this act of filial piety and professional recognition took place near the end of Monro's illustrious career. The portrait's preservation for over two centuries attests to the esteem in which Monro was held by his peers and successors. Monro's legacy extended beyond Scotland, as his students and their students went on to make significant contributions to medicine and science around the world. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of Monro's enduring impact on the scientific community and the importance of anatomical education in advancing medical knowledge.
