1731 Alexander Leslie

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Scottish military commander, Alexander Leslie. Born in 1731, Leslie rose through the ranks of the British Army, earning a reputation as a brilliant tactician and a formidable leader. His military career began in earnest during the Seven Years' War, where he served under the Duke of Cumberland in the Battle of Hastenbeck. Leslie's greatest achievement came during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, when he was appointed as the second in command to the Earl of Mar under Bonnie Prince Charlie. However, Leslie's loyalty to the British Crown ultimately prevailed, and he played a crucial role in the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden. Despite his service to the British, Leslie's Scottish heritage and his association with the Jacobite cause made him a controversial figure. He was court-martialed and stripped of his rank and honors, but was later pardoned and allowed to return to military service. Leslie continued to serve in the British Army until his retirement in 1782. This portrait, likely taken in the late 18th century, captures the essence of a complex and intriguing historical figure. Leslie's piercing eyes and stern expression convey a sense of resolve and conviction, while the intricate detail of his uniform and military accoutrements attest to his status as a respected and accomplished military commander. This image offers a glimpse into the life of a man who straddled the line between loyalty to his country and his heritage, and serves as a reminder of the complexities of Scottish history during this period.
