EDITORS COMMENTS
Alexander III the Great, also known as Alexandros III of Macedon, was one of the most legendary figures in ancient history. Born in 356 BC in Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia, he was the son of King Philip II and Princess Epirotan Olympia. Ruling from 336 to 323 BC, Alexander expanded the Macedonian Empire to include much of Europe and Asia, making him one of the greatest military commanders in history. This stunning bronze bust in gold leaf, dating from the 2nd century AD, is a testament to the enduring legacy of Alexander the Great. Discovered in the Kircheriano Museum at Palazzo Massimo in the National Roman Museum in Rome, Italy, this exquisite work of art showcases the king's regal bearing and powerful presence. The intricately detailed features of Alexander's face and the delicate gold leaf covering the bust convey the elegance and sophistication of the Hellenistic period. Alexander's reign marked the height of the Argead Dynasty, which began with his father, Philip II. The dynasty is known for producing some of the most influential rulers in ancient history, including Alexander's successor, Alexander IV, and his legendary predecessor, Alexander the Great's father, Philip II. This magnificent bronze bust is a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of Greece and Rome, and the profound impact that Alexander the Great had on the world. The intricacies of the sculpture, the golden hue of the leaf, and the serene expression on Alexander's face all combine to create a powerful and evocative image that continues to captivate and inspire us today.
