Albert Chevalier

Albert Chevalier (21 March 1861 10 July 1923) was an English, music hall comedian, singer and musical theatre actor. He specialised in cockney related humour based on life as a costermonger in London during the Victorian era, famous for his cockney songs like My Old Dutch. He later returned to straight theatre. Chevalier was so popular that his inclusion in Alick P.F. Ritchies series of music hall stars was inevitable. However, his claim to be The Coster King might have been challenged by his rival Gus Elen (22 July 1862 17 February 1940). Date: 1800s, 1900s, ?

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of Albert Chevalier, a beloved English music hall comedian, singer, and musical theatre actor, who reigned supreme in the realm of cockney humor during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Born on March 21, 1861, Chevalier rose to fame portraying the life of a costermonger – a street vendor – in London's vibrant Victorian era. His signature songs, such as "My Old Dutch," showcased his unique comedic talent and resonated deeply with audiences. Chevalier's popularity was undeniable, and his inclusion in Alick P.F. Ritchie's esteemed series of music hall stars was a testament to his enduring influence. However, his title as The Coster King might have been contested by his rival, Gus Elen, who was born on July 22, 1862. Both comedians brought joy and laughter to the masses, donning their iconic feathered hats and delivering comedic performances that continue to be cherished today. This photograph, taken during Chevalier's prime, transports us back in time and offers a glimpse into the rich history of music hall entertainment. The image captures the warmth and charisma of a man who left an indelible mark on the world of comedy and music.
