Minstrels

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Al. G. Field Minstrels, a renowned traveling musical group, in the early 1910s. The quartet includes Edward Conard, J.E. Hatfield, Jack Conard, and their charismatic leader, Al. G. Field. The group's name is prominently displayed on the poster behind them, adding to the sense of professionalism and excitement. Edward Conard, the tall, bearded banjo player on the far left, wears a serious expression as he focuses intently on his instrument. J.E. Hatfield, the second from the left, holds a mandolin and gazes off into the distance, lost in thought or perhaps the music. Jack Conard, the youngest member of the group, sits in the middle, strumming a guitar and singing into a microphone. His youthful energy and enthusiasm are palpable. At the center of it all is Al. G. Field, the group's namesake and undoubtedly its most dynamic performer. With a twinkle in his eye and a confident grin, he engages the audience with his stage presence. His whiteface makeup and colorful attire are remnants of the minstrel tradition, which had its roots in the 19th century and was popular well into the 20th. Despite the controversy surrounding the use of blackface makeup in minstrelsy, the Al. G. Field Minstrels were known for their authentic and lively performances. Their music, a blend of folk, blues, and jazz, resonated with audiences across the country and helped to preserve the rich musical heritage of the time. This photograph is a rare glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of these talented musicians and the world of minstrelsy.
