EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical photograph captures a poignant moment as Admiral John Rushworth Jellicoe bids farewell to Field-Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener before his embarkation aboard the H.M.S. Hampshire bound for Russia. The image, taken on December 7, 1914, shows Kitchener standing alongside Jellicoe and shaking hands with Hugh James O Beirne of the Foreign Office, who tragically perished in the sinking of the Hampshire on June 5, 1916. Kitchener, who was appointed Secretary of State for War in 1914, met his untimely end when the Hampshire struck a mine off Orkney. His loss was deeply felt by all who knew him. Meanwhile, Jellicoe went on to be promoted to First Sea Lord following the battle of Jutland in 1916. The somber expressions on their faces speak volumes about the gravity of the situation and the uncertainty that lay ahead. This photograph serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during times of conflict and honors those who gave their lives in service to their country. As we reflect on this powerful image from history, let us remember and pay tribute to all those brave individuals who have made invaluable contributions in times of war and peace.
