During the Battle of Jutland, he commanded the SMS Derfflinger, a powerful German battlecruiser, and played a crucial role in the engagement. Following the battle, Zenker was decorated with the Pour le Mérite, the highest military decoration in the German military, in recognition of his bravery and leadership.
