Postcard from the First World War depicting a woman knitting comforts for soldiers (note the khaki coloured wool), and gazing wistfully into the distance, no doubt hoping that her own soldier will make it back to Blighty unharmed. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative postcard, titled "Active Service" by Harold Copping, captures the essence of women's contributions to the war effort during World War I. The image depicts a woman intently knitting with khaki-colored wool, her gaze wistful and yearning as she dreams of her own soldier making it back from the front unharmed. Knitting comforts for troops was a popular way for women to participate in the war effort, with patterns for various items such as hats, mittens, mufflers, and waistcoats appearing frequently in women's magazines of the period. The use of wool, a traditional and comforting material, added to the sense of warmth and care that these handmade items provided. The knitter's focused expression and the contrast between the homely setting and the distant battlefield create a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during this historic time. Dated between 1914 and 1918, this postcard is a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of women during the Great War, and a reminder of the important role they played in supporting the troops on the front lines.
