1612 1686 Abraham Lutheran Theologian

EDITORS COMMENTS
Abraham Calov, also known as Calovius (1612-1686), was a prominent German Lutheran theologian of the 17th century. Born in Silesia, Calov studied at the University of Wittenberg, the intellectual center of the Lutheran Reformation. He later served as a pastor in various parishes in Silesia and Moravia, and was a prolific writer and scholar. Calov is best known for his contributions to Lutheran theology, particularly in the areas of biblical exegesis and dogmatics. He was a strong advocate of the Lutheran orthodoxy, which emphasized the centrality of Scripture and the doctrine of justification by faith alone. Calov's most famous work, "Explanatio Symboli Apostolici," is a comprehensive commentary on the Apostles' Creed, which became a standard text in Lutheran theology. Calov was also a key figure in the political and ecclesiastical struggles of his time. He served as a theological advisor to various rulers, including the Elector of Brandenburg, and was involved in the efforts to establish a united Lutheran Church in Germany. Calov's ecumenical spirit and commitment to the unity of the Lutheran Church made him a respected figure among Lutherans and other Protestant denominations. Despite his many accomplishments, Calov faced opposition and persecution throughout his career. He was expelled from Moravia in 1654 for his Lutheran beliefs, and spent the last years of his life in exile in Brandenburg. Calov's legacy, however, endured, and his works continue to be studied and appreciated by scholars and theologians today. This portrait captures the intellectual and spiritual depth of a man who dedicated his life to the service of God and the Lutheran faith.
