EDITORS COMMENTS
Abd al-Qadir B Muhyi al-Din al-Hasani, also known as Abdelkader, was a prominent Algerian leader during the 19th century. Born in 1808, Abdelkader rose to prominence during the Algerian resistance against French colonial rule. He was a charismatic and influential figure who gained the loyalty of many Algerians through his military prowess and his commitment to preserving Algerian culture and traditions. This engraving, colored in later hand, captures the essence of Abdelkader's leadership and determination. The image shows him wearing traditional Algerian clothing, with a turban on his head and a long robe covering his body. His piercing gaze and strong posture convey a sense of authority and resolve. Abdelkader's political career began in 1832, when he led a successful rebellion against the French invasion of Algeria. He established a polity in the region of Algiers, which he ruled as an independent emir. Over the next several years, Abdelkader waged a guerrilla war against the French, using his knowledge of the terrain and the support of local tribes to outmaneuver his enemies. Despite his military successes, Abdelkader's rule was not without its challenges. He faced opposition from within his own ranks, as well as from European powers who saw Algeria as a valuable prize. In 1837, Abdelkader was forced to surrender to the French, and he was exiled to Damascus. He spent the rest of his life in exile, but he continued to inspire resistance movements in Algeria and other parts of the Muslim world. This engraving is a testament to Abdelkader's enduring legacy as a symbol of Algerian resistance and national pride. It reminds us of a time when the struggle for independence was a matter of life and death, and when leaders like Abdelkader risked everything to defend their people and their culture.
