EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Aaron Hill: The Visionary Dramatist and Opera Manager of 18th Century London". This print depicts Aaron Hill (1685-1750), a pivotal figure in the English literary and theatrical scene of the 18th century. Hill was an accomplished dramatist, writer, and opera manager, whose contributions to the world of arts and letters left an indelible mark on history. Born in the late 17th century, Hill authored 17 plays, some of which were adaptations, such as his versions of Voltaire's "Zaire" and Molière's "Tartuffe." In addition to his literary pursuits, Hill also penned poetry, showcasing his versatility and artistic range. However, Hill's life was not without its challenges. Despite his many endeavors, his commercial schemes, though well-intentioned, often met with failure. Nevertheless, Hill's greatest achievement came when he was just 24 years old, as the manager of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. During his tenure, he staged the premiere of George Frideric Handel's "Rinaldo," the first Italian opera designed for a London audience. Handel, a close collaborator, was deeply involved in the production, and Hill worked closely with him on the libretto. Although the extent of Hill's actual contributions to the libretto remains a subject of debate, his role in bringing this groundbreaking work to the London stage is undeniable. This evocative print captures the essence of Hill's visionary spirit and his enduring impact on the world of English literature and opera. With his wig swept back and a determined look in his eyes, Hill stands as a testament to the power of artistic innovation and the indomitable human spirit. Date: 1710.
