EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "The 8th Earl of Pembroke: A Naval Commander in the English Restoration" The image captures the distinguished figure of Thomas Herbert, the 8th Earl of Pembroke (1656-1733), a renowned British naval commander during the English Restoration. Born into the noble Herbert family, Thomas Herbert followed in the footsteps of his ancestors, who had a long and illustrious history in the military and politics. During the late 17th century, England was embroiled in a series of wars, both at home and abroad. The Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667) marked the beginning of Herbert's naval career. He served under the command of the Duke of York, the future King James II, and proved himself to be a capable and dedicated officer. In the Battle of Lowestoft (1665), Herbert's bravery and leadership were instrumental in securing a significant English victory against the Dutch fleet. Following the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, Thomas Herbert was appointed as a Member of Parliament for Pembroke, further cementing his position in English society. However, his true passion lay at sea, and he continued to serve in the Royal Navy. In 1672, he was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, and later, in 1689, he became a Vice-Admiral. Despite his achievements, Thomas Herbert's life was not without controversy. He was involved in a bitter feud with his cousin, the Duke of Somerset, which led to a duel in 1676. Although the duel ended in a stalemate, the incident tarnished Herbert's reputation. The image of the 8th Earl of Pembroke, with his stern expression and military attire, embodies the spirit of a dedicated naval commander. His service to the Crown, both on land and at sea, contributed significantly to England's military history during the Restoration period. This photograph is a testament to his legacy and the enduring influence of the noble Herbert family.
