EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the 2nd Battalion of the British Army making their way from the docks during the General Strike of 1926. The General Strike, which took place from May 3rd to May 12th, was a mass protest against wage cuts and poor working conditions. The military were called in to maintain order and protect essential services. In this image, we see the soldiers, dressed in their full uniforms and carrying their equipment, marching in formation along a city street. The atmosphere is tense, with onlookers watching from the sidelines and buildings looming in the background. The soldiers appear focused and determined, their faces set as they make their way through the crowd. The photograph is part of a collection of 681 images amassed by General Sir Augustus Francis Andrew Nicol Thorne between the years 1926 and 1930. Thorne, who was born in 1898, went on to have a distinguished military career, serving in both World War I and World War II. This photograph offers a unique insight into a significant moment in British history, and provides a powerful reminder of the role of the military during times of industrial unrest. The photograph's historical significance is further underscored by the fact that it was taken during a period when Thorne was serving as Regimental Commanding Officer. The image provides a valuable record of the 2nd Battalion's involvement in the General Strike, and offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.
