LM of epithelial cells from the human mouth
Cells of the mouth. Light micrograph of squamous (flat and scale-like) epithelial cells from the human mouth. Inside each cell is an oval nucleus and a granular cytoplasm. The epithelia are tissues that cover the entire external surface of the body and line all the hollow structures (except blood and lymph vessels). These cells rest on a basement membrane which separates the epithelium from underlying connective tissue. Blood vessels do not extend beyond the basement layer, and epithelial cells are dependent on the diffusion of oxygen and metabolites from under- lying tissue. Magnification: x63 at 35mm size
