EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases an engraving of William Floyd, dating back to 1837. This particular piece is the third state of the engraving and measures approximately 6 x 4 1/4 inches (153 x 108 cm). Created by Asher Brown Durand, a renowned American artist born in Jefferson, New Jersey in 1796 and passed away in Maplewood in 1886, this artwork holds historical significance. The original painting was done by Ralph Earl, who hailed from Worcester County, Massachusetts between 1751 and 1801. However, it was Durand who skillfully transformed Earl's work into this exquisite engraving. The attention to detail is evident as every stroke captures Floyd's essence flawlessly. William Floyd himself was a prominent figure during his time. Born in Bolton, Connecticut in 1734 and passing away in Westernville, New York in1821; he played a vital role as one of the signers of the United States Declaration of Independence. This remarkable print serves as a testament to both artistic talent and historical legacy. It allows us to appreciate not only the craftsmanship involved but also offers insight into an important period of American history. As we gaze upon this image today, we are transported back to a time when great men like William Floyd shaped our nation's destiny through their unwavering dedication and commitment to freedom.
