EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Storming Camp Mount Gadan 1769" takes us back in time to witness a significant historical event. Created through the meticulous technique of etching engraving, this artwork measures an impressive 25 13/16 by 39 5/8 inches (655 by 1006 cm). It is part of a series commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor in 1765 to commemorate the victorious battles fought by the Manchu forces between 1755 and 1759. The scene depicted in this print illustrates a successful attack on an enemy camp led by Kalmouk Ayusi, a Mongol warrior who entered service under the Qing dynasty. The artist, Jacques Philippe Le Bas from Paris, skillfully captures the intensity and chaos of battle with intricate details that bring every element to life. Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian artist from Milan known for his work at Beijing's imperial court, originally painted this scene. Charles Nicolas Cochin II then translated it into engraving form under the direction of Direxit. This remarkable piece not only showcases artistic excellence but also provides valuable insights into Central Asian history. It serves as a testament to the triumphs achieved against various Central Asian peoples such as Eleuths and Dzungars during that period. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back in time and reminded of their bravery and resilience.
