This print showcases the regal presence of Sultan Ahmed III, who reigned over the Ottoman Empire from 1703 to 1730. Part of a remarkable series of paintings with Turkish subjects, this particular artwork was brought from Turkey to the Netherlands in 1817 by ambassador Cornelis Calkoen and his cousin Nicolaas. It was later entrusted to the Management of the Levantsche Handel in Amsterdam for safekeeping. The sultan's imposing figure dominates the composition as he gazes confidently into the distance.
