Picus Occipitalis. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould

Picus Occipitalis. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "Picus Occipitalis" a stunning bird species found in the Himalaya Mountains. Engraved in 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, this artwork represents their remarkable collaboration. John Gould, known as the bird-stuffer at the Zoological Society, developed a deep fascination with birds from the east during the late 1820s. This passion was ignited when a collection of avian specimens from the Himalayas arrived at the society's museum. Inspired by these exotic creatures, John conceived an ambitious project: to publish a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty different species and one hundred individual birds. To bring his vision to life, he enlisted Elizabeth Gould's artistic talent. She meticulously created intricate drawings that were then transferred onto large lithographic stones. The resulting prints are now famously referred to as "Gould plates". Each plate is a masterpiece of color and detail, showcasing not only the beauty but also capturing unique animal behavior and markings. The close-up depiction allows viewers to appreciate every feather and pattern on this Asian bird. This particular print is part of Liszt Collection's extensive archive of early nineteenth-century British art. It serves as a testament to both Elizabeth and John Gould's contributions to natural history illustration during this period. Their collaborative efforts have left an indelible mark on ornithology enthusiasts worldwide who continue to marvel at their exquisite depictions of avian wonders from distant lands like Picus Occipitalis in all its glory.
