Pica Erythrorhyncha. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould

Pica Erythrorhyncha. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite engraving of "Pica Erythrorhyncha. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains" by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould in 1831. John Gould, renowned as the bird-stuffer, first developed a fascination with birds from the east when a collection of avian species arrived at the Zoological Society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by this encounter, he conceived the idea of publishing an impressive volume featuring hand-colored lithographs of eighty species and figures of one hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing these illustrations to life. She meticulously created intricate drawings that were then transferred onto large lithographic stones, resulting in what are now famously known as "Gould plates". The attention to detail and vibrant colors captured within each plate make them truly remarkable. The Pica Erythrorhyncha depicted in this particular engraving is an Asian bird native to the majestic Himalayan mountains. Its exotic appearance and strikingly long tail add to its allure. This artwork not only serves as a visual delight but also provides valuable insights into animal behavior, markings, patterns, and natural history during early nineteenth-century England. Displayed against a neutral background, this close-up illustration allows viewers to appreciate every minute detail with clarity. It is no wonder that Elizabeth Gould's collaboration with her husband John has left an indelible mark on British art and European artistic traditions.
