Phasianus Pucrasia (male), Perdix chukar

Phasianus Pucrasia (male), Perdix chukar. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning beauty of two bird species found in the Himalaya Mountains - Phasianus Pucrasia (male) and Perdix chukar. Engraved in 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, this artwork is a testament to their exceptional talent and passion for ornithology. John Gould, known as the "bird-stuffer" by the Zoological Society, developed an infatuation with birds from the east during the late 1820s. His fascination grew when a collection of avian specimens from the Himalayas arrived at the society's museum. Inspired by these exotic creatures, he conceived an ambitious project - publishing a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty different species and one hundred bird figures. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing these illustrations to life. She meticulously made drawings of each bird before transferring them onto large lithographic stones. The resulting prints, now famously referred to as "Gould plates" are renowned for their intricate detail and vibrant colors. This particular image captures both birds in full splendor - showcasing their unique markings, elegant tails, and vivid plumage. The attention to detail is remarkable; every feather seems to come alive on paper. Dating back to the early 19th century, this illustration represents not only a significant contribution to natural history but also stands as a testament to British artistry during that era. It serves as an exquisite reminder of our planet's diverse wildlife heritage and invites us into a world where nature's wonders unfold through artistic mastery.
