EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two exquisite pendant designs of sun dials, dating back to 1581. The engraving, captured by Artokoloro, depicts the second state of these remarkable pieces. Measuring approximately 6 15/16 by 5 3/16 inches (177 by 132 cm), this vertical panel was created by Jan Collaert I, a renowned Netherlandish artist from Antwerp. The intricate details of these pendants are truly mesmerizing. Adorned with strapwork, grotesques, and various ornaments, they hang gracefully suspended from small jeweled motifs tied together with a delicate ribbon. Atop each pendant rests a circular sun dial design; however, the left one is particularly intriguing as it features outward-facing female heads with serpentine necks. These pendant designs not only serve as stunning decorative accessories but also function as time-telling instruments. Their historical significance and artistic craftsmanship make them an invaluable addition to any collection or display.
