Myophonus Temmenckii. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth
Myophonus Temmenckii. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, capturing the beauty of Myophonus Temmenckii, a bird species native to the Himalaya Mountains. Created in 1831, this engraving is part of a larger collection that John Gould envisioned after being inspired by a shipment of birds from the east at the Zoological Society's museum. John Gould, known as "the bird-stuffer" collaborated with his talented wife Elizabeth to bring these avian wonders to life through hand-colored lithographs. The result was an impressive volume featuring eighty species and figures of one hundred birds, all meticulously illustrated by Elizabeth and transferred onto large lithographic stones. In this particular image, we are treated to a close-up view of Myophonus Temmenckii. Its exotic appearance is accentuated by its striking tail feathers and intricate markings. The attention to detail in both color and form highlights the skillful artistry employed by Elizabeth Gould. Transporting us back to the early 19th century, this illustration not only captures the essence of an Asian bird but also represents a significant contribution to natural history documentation during that time period. It serves as a testament to British artist Elizabeth Gould's talent and her collaboration with her husband John in their pursuit of capturing nature's wonders for generations to come.
