Muscipeta Brevirostris. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth

Muscipeta Brevirostris. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Muscipeta Brevirostris, a bird species native to the majestic Himalaya Mountains. Engraved in 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, this artwork is part of their renowned collection of hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty different bird species. John Gould, known as the talented "bird-stuffer" taxidermist at the Zoological Society, developed a deep fascination for birds from the East when a shipment of avian specimens arrived at the society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by these exotic creatures, he conceived the idea of creating an imperial folio-sized volume with detailed illustrations and figures of one hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould played an integral role in bringing these stunning illustrations to life. She meticulously made drawings that were then transferred onto large lithographic stones. The resulting prints, referred to as Gould plates, showcase not only her artistic skill but also highlight each bird's intricate details and vibrant colors. This particular engraving captures Muscipeta Brevirostris in all its glory – its unique tail feathers elegantly displayed against a colorful background. The close-up perspective allows us to appreciate every minute detail carefully captured by Elizabeth and John Gould's expert hands. Dating back to the early 19th century, this illustration represents both British and European artistry at its finest. It serves as a testament to John and Elizabeth Gould's dedication to natural history documentation through their exceptional talent for capturing animal behavior and markings. Displayed within books and manuscripts or framed on your wall, this enchanting print from Quint Lox offers a glimpse into nature's wonders while celebrating centuries-old artistry that continues to captivate audiences today.
