The Mufti, head of religious affairs, Vanmour probably painted the portrait of Abdullah Efendi (1680? -1743). This originally Greek clergyman was attached to the court from 1718 in the function of Seyh ul Islam and had to clear the field after the uprising of 1730. He was exiled, but returned silently to Istanbul where he died in 1743.
