EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a legendary moment in history, depicting the works and significance of the German Order. The central figure is a distinguished legend, surrounded by symbols representing the esteemed Alden Biesen land commandery. Flanking this enigmatic figure are two orderidders, glorifying the German Order with their presence. The composition is rich in symbolism and detail, capturing the essence of this historical event. The coat of arms belonging to Hendrik van Wassenaer, the land commander of Alden Biesen, stands proudly alongside those of equestrian chief Johann Hermann baron Spies von Bullesheim and sub-tribune Damian Hugo baron von Schonborn in Reichelsberg. As part of an extensive presentation consisting of 20 separate plates dedicated to documenting the history and achievements of the German Order, this particular print holds immense value. It offers a glimpse into a world where military orders such as Knights Templars, Knights of Malta, and Teutonic Knights played crucial roles alongside representatives from Roman Catholic church. The personification of both Church and Christian knight adds depth to this visual narrative. With Ecclesia holding her chalice and banner high above her head while Miles Christianus stands tall beside her - these figures embody faith and valor intertwined. Created by Romeyn de Hooghe in Haarlem during 1700 using paper engraving techniques, this remarkable piece measures 344 mm in height by 510 mm in width.
